Anyone know about the South Eastern part of OK?

Looking at some land up there today on a river and wonder if anyone has knowledge of that area as far as a bugout place?

Thanks

Not too far from Arkansas :applause_

Actually, you better check what's upstream. Specifically check for chicken farms and pig farms in the area. I heard that could be a problem in NW Arkansas since there are large chicken and pig farms in the area. Could ruin your water quality if you're downstream from one of those.

Southern Missouri would be better. Oklahoma is OK if you're part Indian, otherwise you might be somewhat of an outsider.

It is beautiful country. Somewhat dryer than Arkansas. Practical people and smarter than general appearances. Some of the highest IQ, best educated people I know are Okies who are as down to earth as old shoes and not a bit show offy about how smart they are.

I'm not sure what in Oklahoma's history selected for that. My ancestors from that side of the family preferred Indian Territory to fighting for the rich on either side of the Civil War, and went off and built sod houses and some married Indians and some had families when they went. Not dying for a pack of politicians shows good sense, to me. The other side of the family ignored the Civil War too. But by other means.

The small towns generally have social structure rooted in the churches. So if you are not religiously inclined, it makes it a slower process of fitting in. But being 'neighborly' is traditional, and if you are too, things could work out fine. You may get more visitors than you expect at first because of that. Demonstrating that you are a good neighbor right away by being friendly and helpful in whatever way presents itself goes a long way. Being a show off is scorned. Avoid it like poison ivy.

Small town politics are often battles for the few secure jobs so watch out at first. You might be threatening someone's livlihood and not realize it just by favoring a candidate. Even driving the school bus can mean a lot to a farm family. Therefore even the school board can be a big deal to somebody.

I don't know. First stab would be to get most current topo maps available and look for structures upstream from your location. Then drive there and find out what's there.

As far as Oklahoma goes, this is a pretty nice area. You need to think about several things, depending on what this place is for you. If it's NOT a bugout place then you can disregard some of these isssues.

Water: Either a well or pond system. Most places in OK have good groundwater. Either system can be powered by solar. They sell water pump kits with solar ready to go for this purpose.

Weather: Very severe in OK. Goes from below freezing in the winter with heavy ice (very little snow, actually) to above 100 in the summer with severe thunderstorms in between. I've never been in a place with as strong of storms as OK. Make sure you have a good structure and a tornado shelter. Make sure all drive paths can be used in mud or ice.

Bugs: Very buggy in OK. Lots of skeeters and june bugs as well as other assorted flying things. Leave your outside light in the 1st time in Spring/Summer and you'll know what I mean. However you need to deal with this is up to you but those weenie tiki torches and off WILL NOT cut it.

Good for wind power if you want to go that direction. The wind blows all the time in OK. I grew up in the Tulsa area and that city is windier than Chicago.

Im in Tulsa and have considered land in SE OK. There are alot of nice places near Hugo that are cheap but it just seemed to close to Dallas. Would hate to have the Dallas Metroplex bugging out to my farm. Hugo is also east of Tinker Air Force base which was another concern I had.

heres one link I found
